Control limit. How COVID-19 was fought in different armies of the world

Plot A new type of coronavirus pandemic that has spread from China

At the beginning of the summer, it was reported that the Russian Armed Forces had formed a collective immunity to the coronavirus. This was achieved mainly through vaccination, but at first the military fought the virus by introducing quarantine measures and testing. Foreign armed forces also faced infection. The number of publications in the open press devoted to the problem of COVID-19 in the armies of different states is very limited. However, found some episodes of the fight against COVID-19 abroad.

The army is an ideal environment for the spread of COVID-19. The peculiarities of personnel placement, close contact between military personnel during training and other events, common dining rooms and the mixing of people from different regions when forming military teams create conditions for an increased risk of contracting respiratory infections, including SARS-CoV-2.

In early 2020, 5,100 French soldiers took part in a large-scale combat operation in Mali against armed terrorist groups. This military operation coincided with the beginning of the massive COVID-19 disease in the country. This fact has led to a radical revision of medical support in connection with the need to provide medical care not only to the wounded and injured, but also to actively prevent new coronavirus infection, identify cases of infection and treat patients.

The results of this peacekeeping mission highlighted the need to urgently develop and implement in the Armed Forces their own measures to limit the spread and minimize the consequences of the disease COVID-19 among the personnel.

Last stronghold

Since the end of February 2020, the Israel Defense Forces have taken measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 among military personnel and maintain the combat capability of units. First of all, the measures consisted in strict observance of social distancing and personal hygiene, the use of personal protective equipment and 14-day isolation of contact persons and after the arrival of military personnel from abroad, regardless of the presence of symptoms.

Emphasis was placed on the active identification of low-symptom individuals and additional special (medical) training of personnel with the introduction of telecommunications technologies in the form of graphical algorithms, electronic brochures, video guides and presentations.

Such powerful measures made it possible to keep 98% of the personnel out of quarantine, without fever and respiratory symptoms, on the 53rd day after their introduction.

The Indian Armed Forces, as a measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the troops and early detection of asymptomatic cases, have ordered all military personnel returning from vacation to be quarantined for 14 days. Testing for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA by PCR was performed at the onset of clinical symptoms of acute respiratory disease and at the end of quarantine, even if the military personnel did not make any complaints.

North remembers

As a response to the spread of COVID-19, the Canadian Armed Forces, in addition to strict personal hygiene, physical distancing, the use of personal protective equipment, immediate notification of the appearance of symptoms of acute respiratory infections and potential contact with COVID-19 patients, introduced a mandatory 14-day quarantine before and after military operations. In addition, most military exercises and training were canceled or postponed in 2020.

In the Norwegian Armed Forces, on the first day of arrival in the unit of recruits, in addition to monitoring the state of health, interviewing for the presence of symptoms of ARVI and measuring body temperature, mandatory PCR testing for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 was conducted with a repeat test after three and six weeks.

Passing tests

In the Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the army and to block the direct introduction of the infection to military medical organizations, special screening departments were formed in all 13 military hospitals. Upon receiving a positive test result, the military personnel were taken to a special hospital that was repurposed to work with COVID-19.

The organization of prevention and screening of COVID-19 among new recruits of the US Armed Forces is impressive. All cadets undergoing basic training at the Joint Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, are quarantined for 14 days in a single room upon arrival and are examined daily by a medical professional. Priority PCR testing was performed on all persons with symptoms of acute respiratory infections, contact persons and those who arrived from epidemiologically unfavorable regions of the country. In addition, the recruitment of cadets from the US regions was reduced by almost 40%.the most unfavorable epidemiological situation. For Marine Corps recruits, to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection during initial training at a training camp on Parris Island, South Carolina, the US Navy Command was ordered to undergo a 14-day quarantine at home and PCR testing before arriving on campus. Upon arrival, all recruits were necessarily placed back in a controlled 14-day quarantine, and the biomaterial was collected for testing on SARS-CoV-2 on the day of arrival, as well as on the 7th and 14th days.
