WHO and UNICEF have noted a decrease in the number of routine vaccinations among children

Plot A new type of coronavirus pandemic that has spread from China

The World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that due to the coronavirus pandemic, almost 23 million children worldwide missed routine vaccination last year, Interfax reports.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a serious decline in the vaccination rate of children, which has set us back more than a decade,” said Kate O’Brien, head of the WHO Department of Immunization.

It is noted that there has been an “alarming increase” in the number of children with a “zero dose” of those who have not undergone any vaccination.

According to the WHO, the lack of necessary vaccinations, which were supposed to be made in 2020, led to the outbreak of the measles epidemic in Pakistan. Insufficient vaccination of children against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis is also of concern.

Earlier, scientists from the Australian Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne said that one of the negative consequences of the coronavirus pandemic in the world could be an outbreak of measles. This is proved by a study conducted with the support of the SAGE working group on measles and rubella vaccines of the World Health Organization.

What have scientists learned about the movement of plastic in the ocean?

Researchers from the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at the University of Newcastle decided to use formulas and equations to describe the processes of movement of microplastics in ocean water. This work was carried out for the first time.

Photo: Shutterstock.com

We are not talking about horizontal currents that lead to the formation of giant garbage spots in the World’s oceans, and even islands, but about the vertical movement of microplastic particles. Such fragments (their size is less than 5 millimeters) make up 90% of all plastic debris found in the ocean. However, a significant part of them is not on the surface, but in depth. Calculations show that there should be much more floating plastic particles than scientists observe. This means that the microplastic is lost in the deep layers of the water column, but what causes it to sink and how it happens has not been clear until now.

“Mathematical modeling allows us to predict the distribution of microplastics in the ocean,” the British researchers write in their article. Our model combines equations describing the vertical movement of particles and the dynamics of the algae population. Previous studies have shown that biofouling causes microplastic particles to oscillate under the ocean surface; however, this is the first time we can describe these processes.

Scientists have found out that the movement of plastic particles largely depends on algae.Fragments of garbage are extremely sensitive to the attachment and growth of cells of marine organisms on them. Under their influence, they are always immersed to a certain depth and fluctuate vertically depending on the properties of algae and theirsensitivity to light penetration. And descending into denser layers of water, they fall into a kind of trap – large accumulations of algae. After that, they will most likely fall even lower to the very bottom. The researchers calculated the time it takes for the microplastics to get dirty enough and start sinking. This is usually two weeks.

“We hope that our research will help to understand the mechanism of plastic pollution of the ocean and ultimately make it clean,” they note.

According to forecasts, by 2025, the mass of plastic that enters the world’s oceans every year will be from 100 to 250 million tons. This type of garbage is found in the marine environment everywhere, including in the ice of the Arctic and Antarctic. It negatively affects the fauna, reducing its number and growth. Almost all marine ecosystems suffer, including those that serve the needs of thehumanity. Fish and other ocean inhabitants swallow a suspension of microplastics, taking it for food, and particles that are not digested by the body are transmitted further along the food chain. When we eat fish and seafood, they enter our gastrointestinal tract.

As for the effect of microplastics on the human body, it has not yet been studied -science has not yet accumulated such data.

What is known about the B-21 Raider, the” coolest ” aircraft according to the Pentagon?

The published image of a strategic stealth bomber is the third official picture. The visualization shows a B-21 Raider flying over Edwards Air Force Base in California. The configuration of the windows of the aircraft has changed: another window, narrow and arched, appeared on the left side of the cockpit. It is unclear why these windows are needed and what explains their shape. They will be below the pilot’s field of view.

Northrop Grumman has been developing the B-21 since 2015 to replace the aging B-52 Stratofortress and B-2 Spirit bombers. In 2017, the company completed the preliminary design of the aircraft, and in 2019, it began assembling the first flight model. The first flight of the promising bomber was scheduled for December 2021, but it was postponed to the middle of 2022.

Currently, we have decided on the appearance of the B-21 Raider. The aircraft will have a “flying wing” scheme, similar to that used in the B-2 Spirit strategic bomber. The B-21 will have one bomboluk. Its exact size is not disclosed, but the military says that it will be larger than the UCLASS project carrier-based drone and smaller than the B-2 strategic bomber. The length and wingspan of the first is 11.6 and 18.9 meters, and the second is 21 and 52.4 meters.

The new bomber is being created using the latest advances in stealth technology. For example, the jet streams of its engines will be shielded. It is reported that the stealth bomber will be able to remain virtually unnoticed by the enemy’s air defense (air defense) means. In June, it was reported that the B-21 Raider would be invulnerable to the promising Russian S-500 “Prometheus” anti-aircraft missile systems.

“The coolest B-21 Raider will become a carrier of non-nuclear and nuclear weapons, which means that it is the main element of the American nuclear triad. The Pentagon believes that the key to victory in a possible conflict will be the mass use of the B-21 Raider with the support of the B-1 Lancer and B-52 Stratofortress, which can carry more weapons.

Immediately after being put into service, a promising strategic bomber will be able to carry conventional and nuclear weapons, for example, corrected ammunition Joint Directed Attack Munition (JDAM) and AGM-158 Joint Air to Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM), as well as B83 and B61-12 nuclear bombs. The built-in open systems architecture feature on the B-21 gives the bomber almost unlimited opportunities for improvement, and also allows it to be integrated with most weapons systems of the future .

The first flight of the bomber is scheduled for May 2022. The adoption of the new strategic bomber is expected in 2026-2027. In the current administration of the US President, they stated that they would support the Pentagon’s acquisition of 145 B-21 Raider units.

Russia is also developing a promising unobtrusive bomber, the PAK DA, which we wrote about earlier. Its preliminary tests are scheduled for 2023.
