Scientists have proven the benefits of black tea for vascular disease

Russian scientists, having conducted studies on rats, have proved the benefits of black tea in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. This is reported by the press service of the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics (ITEB) RAS with reference to Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy.

Scientists have shown that a cup of black tea of ordinary strength is able to prevent the oxidation process in the aorta after irradiation.

“The study was conducted on rodents, which were created with the help of ionizing radiation in the vessels, thus provoking the rapid initiation of atherosclerosis,” the ITEB RAS reported.

Yuri Korystov, one of the authors of the study, notes that an increase in the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in blood vessels is the main factor in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis.

“A significant contribution to the increase in ROS production is made by an increase in the concentration of angiotensin II, a product of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). <..."In our work, rats were given tea of different brewing strength at different times before irradiation and recorded the activity of ACE and the formation of ROS in the aorta," he added, noting that the tea suppressed the activation of ACE initiated by radiation and an increase in ROS in the aorta.

Black tea, as it turned out during the study, suppressed oxidative stress in the aorta three hours before irradiation, while green tea – six hours before. Based on this, scientists suggest that tea may be recommended for radiotherapy of tumors.Earlier it was reported that English scientists have developed a test that is able to detect 50 types of cancer long before the appearance of symptoms.
