The heaviest snowfall in the entire post-war history is expected in Moscow

In Moscow, a record amount of snow may fall on Tuesday for December 7 for the first time since 1949. This was announced by the leading employee of the weather center “Phobos” Evgeny Tishkovets on his Instagram page.

The forecaster said that in 1949, on this day, 12.7 mm of precipitation fell into the precipitation meters of the VDNH base weather station. The coming Tuesday may repeat the record and even exceed it, Tishkovets believes.

He noted that the reason for the snowfall is the hollow of the Balkan cyclone. Tishkovets warned that especially heavy snow will fall in the period from 9 to 15 hours, and visibility will deteriorate to 500-1000 meters. At this point, the snowdrifts will grow to 15-17 cm . According to the expert, such snowdrifts appear at the beginning of winter no more than once every five years.

Precipitation will weaken only in the evening. Due to the snowfall, the road situation will worsen, and there may also be disruptions in air traffic.

“Thus, the upcoming snowfall for the meteorological history on December 7 may be the strongest in the last 72 years. Nevertheless, the daily record for the whole of December will remain for 1981, when 23 mm of precipitation fell in 24 hours,” concluded Tishkovets.

Earlier it was reported that in St. Petersburg, the night of December 6 turned out to be the coldest in the last 128 years. The thermometer columns dropped to almost 21 degrees below zero.
