Deputies of the State Council of Tatarstan approved a legislative initiative on amendments to the Federal Law “On Weapons” on raising the age of acquisition of weapons from 18 to 21 years, RIA Novosti writes.

Tatarstan parliamentarians drew attention to this problem after the tragedy in Kazan gymnasium No. 175.

It is specified that we are talking about gas, firearms smoothbore long-barreled self-defense weapons, sports, hunting, signal and cold bladed weapons intended for wearing with the national costumes of the peoples of the Russian Federation or the Cossack uniform.

The deputies believe that the requirements should not apply to those who perform military service or service in state paramilitary organizations, as well as citizens with military ranks, or special ranks or class ranks of justice. If the amendments are adopted, they will retain the right to purchase civilian firearms of limited destruction until the age of 21.

The parliamentarians also see the need to give the right to own smoothbore long-barreled weapons only to those who have previously had a weapon of limited destruction for five years. The deputies proposed to leave long-barreled semi-automatic weapons only in the arsenal of professional hunters or high-class athletes.

The authors of the initiative propose to make changes to the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation-to increase fines from 500 to 5000 rubles for violating the rules for storing weapons and to introduce the possibility of their confiscation in case of carrying a person in a state of intoxication or failure to comply with the legal requirements of a police officer to pass a medical examination.

Legislative initiatives adopted by the deputies of the State Council of Tatarstan by a majority vote will be sent to the State Duma.

On May 11, the largest mass murder at a school in Russia in recent years took place in Kazan. A former student of gymnasium No. 175, 19-year-old Ilnaz Galyaviev, set off an explosion and shooting there. Seven children and two teachers were killed. 24 people were injured. The attacker is under arrest, he faces life imprisonment.
