Two records of the maximum temperature have already been set over the weekend in St. Petersburg, said the head of the prognostic center “Meteo” Alexander Shuvalov in an interview with RT. During the week, highs are expected in the central part of Russia from Veliky Novgorod to Nizhny Novgorod. More than 100 temperature records are predicted for the territory from Vologda in the north to Orel, Kursk, Shuvalov said.
What caused the heat wave in Central Russia?
The reason for the drought and heat in European Russia was a blocking anticyclone that was established over the Russian plain (extending from the Urals to the shores of the Black, Caspian, Azov, White and Baltic Seas, & ndash; approx. “A stationary anticyclone is established, and air masses saturated with moisture run along its periphery, but they do not get close to the center,” the meteorologist explained.
