Where will the annular eclipse of the Sun be visible?

The eclipse will begin in North America, then pass through the North Pole of the earth and end in the Russian Far East. The ring-shaped phase will be visible in the province of Ontario (Canada), Greenland (Denmark), at the North Pole, as well as in the east of Russia.

Where can I watch the eclipse in Russia?

The annular phase of the eclipse will be visible only in Yakutia and Chukotka. 

Almost the entire rest of Russia will fall into the field of view of the private eclipse. The partial phases will range from 0.01 (the area covering the diameter of the solar disk) in Komsomolsk-on-Amur (Khabarovsk Territory) to 0.91 in the city of Pevek in Chukotka.

Annular and partial eclipses will not be seen by residents of the Crimea and the North Caucasus, as there the Moon will pass by the Sun in the sky. Also, these phenomena will not be visible in the south of the Khabarovsk Territory, in the Primorsky Territory, in the Jewish Autonomous Region and on Sakhalin, where the Sun will set below the horizon before the eclipse begins.

The annular eclipse will begin at 12: 48 GMT on Lake Superior between Canada and the United States. At 13: 40 Moscow time, the largest phase of the eclipse (0.944) will occur on the northern coast of Greenland, it will last 3 minutes and 52 seconds. At 14: 00 Moscow time, the eclipse will be visible at the North Pole of the Earth, and then the ring-shaped phase will come to the territory of Russia in the north-east of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

At 14: 25, the maximum phase of the annular eclipse (0.94) will be visible on the coast near the mouth of the Indigirka River (the villages of Chokurdakh and Tabor in Yakutia), where the eclipse will last 3 minutes 37 seconds. The annular eclipse will end at 14: 33 Moscow Time just north of Magadan (Magadan region).

At what time will the partial phases of the eclipse be visible?

The partial solar eclipse will begin at 11: 11 GMT in the central Atlantic Ocean, and will end at 16: 11 GMT in the Gobi Desert, near the border of Mongolia and China.

In Russia, a private solar eclipse will begin at 12: 50 Moscow Time in Kaliningrad (Kaliningrad Region), and end at 16:07 Moscow time in Gorno-Altaisk (Altai Republic).

The private phases will be larger in the more northern and eastern regions of the country. In the European part of the Russian Federation, the eclipse phase will be very small, while in the north of Siberia it will be as large as possible.

Residents of Moscow will be able to observe only the partial phases of the solar eclipse. At 13:26, the moon will cover 3% of the Sun, then this area will begin to increase, reaching a maximum at 14: 26. At this time, the Earth’s satellite will cover 16% of the solar disk. Then the area of the partial eclipse will begin to decrease to 2%, this phase will occur at 15: 26, then the eclipse will end.

How to observe a solar eclipse?

To observe a solar eclipse with the naked eye or through a telescope, you can only use a special solar light filter, otherwise you can get a burn of the retina or other serious damage to the visual organ.

When observing through a telescope, the light filter must be installed on the lens. The safest way is to project the image of the Sun on a white screen behind the telescope’s eyepiece. When pointing the telescope at an eclipse, do not look through the eyepiece.
