There is no typo in the inscription in public transport “emergency exit”. The word “emergency” means an emergency exit, an exit that is used in cases of extreme necessity.

The inscription was applied by manufacturers of rolling stock of transport on specially equipped windows of buses,trolleybuses and trams from the inside. It was often accompanied by the following explanations: “pull out the cord”, “squeeze out the glass”, “break the glass with a hammer”and” the hammer is in the driver’s possession”.
Why do they write & laquo; spare», and not & laquo;spare & raquo;?
According to linguist Maxim Krongauz, the word “spare” appeared at the beginning of the XX century. In the 20s, it was recognized by dictionaries as the only normative one, gradually replacing the “spare” one from colloquial speech.
According to the head of the Department of the Russian language of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian State University, the word “reserve” is the same age as the Old Slavic script, when all adjectives had the endings-th and-th. Since there is a concept of a speech cliche in linguistics, the word “spare” has been preserved regardless of the new rules and norms, says Krongauz.
At the same time, the compatibility of the word “spare” is limited. Along with the modern version of “spare”, the adjective is used only in combination with the nouns path, regiment and exit. So, equal options are considered: a spare and a siding, a spare and a spare regiment, a spare and an emergency exit. In combination with other words, it is correct to use the word “spare”: a spare player, a spare key, a spare parachute, etc.
