Why is the UK giving Ukraine its old ships?

Weekly magazine “Arguments and Facts” No. 32. What can I buy with a one-time payment? 11/08/2021 The expert’s answer is 0 + –

The answer is naval expert Sergey Balakin:

“The United States and the United Kingdom began to transfer warships “on retirement” to third countries after the Second World War. For example, Argentina, Chile and Brazil got 2 cruisers each, so that no one had an advantage at sea. After the collapse of the USSR, the Baltic republics began to receive elderly, but suitable ships. By the way, they, like Ukraine, were given minesweepers. Then it made sense: before the beginning of the XXI century, there were untrained sections on the Baltic Sea since the war.

Why vessels of this type are needed on the Black Sea is not entirely clear. Apparently, the British are giving ships according to the principle of “on you, God, what is not good for us”. And why does Belgium donate the hydrographic vessel Belgica built in 1984 to Kiev?

The patrol boats that the US government ordered for the Ukrainian Navy look much newer. However, this is a “mosquito fleet”, and not large warships.
