Scientists from the UK said that a strain of coronavirus has appeared in Botswana, which could potentially be more dangerous than all other variants, writes the Daily Mail.
According to the publication, the strain with the scientific name B.1.1.529 contains 32 mutations, many of which indicate its high transmissibility and resistance to vaccines.
To date, ten cases of this strain have been identified in three countries – Botswana, South Africa and Hong Kong.
According to geneticist Francois Ballou from University College London, the new strain is likely to evade antibodies better than delta.
Earlier, Denis Logunov, deputy director of the Gamalei Center, said that the mortality of the coronavirus exceeded the mortality of swine flu by 50 times.
He said that the mortality rate in acute respiratory viral diseases is “critically lower” than in covid. Logunov noted that with swine flu, the mortality rate is 0.04%, and with COVID-19 – 2%.
