The modernization procedure made the Onyx rocket universal in terms of targets. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to Alexander Leonov, General Director and designer of the Military Industrial Complex “NPO Mashinostroeniya”, member of the regional council of the Moscow Regional regional branch of the Union of Machine Builders of Russia.
Initially, the missile was used to attack marine objects. For example, it is available in the arsenal of coastal complexes “Bastion”.
However, the modernization will allow it to be put into service with submarines, surface ships, aircraft and land-based coastal missile systems, Leonov said. He stressed that now the missile is unified by carriers and can hit any sea and land targets.
Onyx is a medium-range supersonic missile. It was adopted in the Russian Federation in 2002. In addition, it is used in Vietnam, Syria, India and Indonesia.
