On the website of the company “Yandex.Maps” on August 12, the results of a study of the names of settlements in Russia were published.
About 160 thousand different settlements are marked on the map of Russia-this is not counting dacha settlements and some other types. These are mainly villages (57%), villages (19%) and rural settlements (17%). Cities and urban-type settlements make up less than 1.5% of the total number.
The total number of names of localities is approximately 82 thousand. The most common among them are Alexandrovka (there are 333 of them in Russia), Ivanovka (280) and Mikhailovka (272).
There are about 65 thousand unique oikonyms in Russia. So, experts found on the map the settlements of Good Bees, Big Peas, Puffies, Plump, Dudes, Big Piles, Tusnyaki and Big Rzhaksa. In addition, there are also Demonyata, a Golden bottom, a Big Sodom, Shaky, Pork and a Pleasant date.
Among the original names, there are those that “hint” at the features of the place, such as Fierce Swamps and Deep Puddles, or cause comical associations with the features of local residents, such as Smybino and Zlobintsy.
The longest name is the village of Kremenchug-Konstantinovskoye, and if you do not take into account spaces and hyphens – the village of Verkhnenovokutlumbetevo with 23 letters and Nizhnenovokutlumbetevo (22 letters). There are also two-letter oikonyms on the map of the country: there are 27 of them, some of them come across several times. The most common are Yam and Yar, they are in Russia according to 11.
The study revealed that there are settlements in Russia with any letter of the alphabet, except for b and b. Most of all – on & nbsp; to, & nbsp; with and & nbsp; p. There are the least settlements in Russia on the s (there are 22 of them) and th (there are 7 of them).
Experts also found that every second respondent could not explain what, for example, Zhizdra, Ekva, Chlya mean. As linguists have explained, a particular word is more understandable the more it has the same root or similar relatives.
