How does the “new” climate of Russia differ from the “old” one?

In 2021, meteorologists should start using data corresponding to the ” new ” climate of Russia. This was stated in an interview with Sputnik radio by the leading specialist of the weather center “Phobos” Mikhail Leus.

What is the data about the ” new ” climate?

We are talking about new climate standards for all regions of Russia. These are the average values of temperature, precipitation and its intensity, as well as other weather data. They are determined on the basis of observations of meteorologists and climatologists for 30 years.

Periodically, the climate norms are updated. Now meteorologists are still using data from weather observations from 1961 to 1991. In 2021, these climatic characteristics should be updated. Roshydromet has not yet approved and published the norms of the ” new ” climate, Leus said.

How have Russia’s climate norms changed over the past 30 years?

According to the meteorologist, there are no values of the ” new ” climate of the whole of Russia yet. He spoke about the changes in the indicators that relate to Moscow. In particular, the weather in the capital in August, compared with the ” old ” climate, has become warmer and rainy.

The previous climatic norm of precipitation was 77 mm, with the ” new ” climate, they fall 78 millimeters. The difference is only one millimeter, while the number of rainy days has increased significantly. If earlier in the last summer month there were an average of 10 days with precipitation, now there are 15. Thus, rain every second day is already the norm. In turn, the average August temperature in Moscow increased by more than one degree: from 16.4 to 17.6.
