Preservation of cultural heritage. GIM has an online store

Today, no one can imagine going to a museum without visiting a souvenir shop, because a modern visitor does not just want to see an exhibition or a permanent exhibition, but also to leave a tangible piece of the emotions experienced for his memory.

And, of course, museum workers do not consider the shops as a separate space, but as another platform for communication with the visitor and an additional source of information about the museum’s activities. In addition, some museums act as publishers, releasing catalogues for exhibitions, popular science publications, albums of museum collections. Presenting to visitors publications and souvenirs with images based on motivescollections, the museum gets a great chance to increase its recognition, while remaining relevant and “alive”. Of course, the presence of an online store is another opportunity to popularize cultural heritage with the help of modern technologies. The online store significantly expands the boundaries of the museum and makes it possible to build a dialogue with visitors who, for one reason or another, cannot actually visit.

The design of the souvenirs uses images of flora and fauna from the prints of the Atlas edition to Captain Kruzenshtern’s Journey Around the World. The history of the appearance of engravings is very interesting, and, of course, it will be interesting for those who purchase souvenirs.

The atlas engravings were created by the masters of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts on the basis of drawings made during the expedition naturalist V.G. Tilesius von Thielenau and astronomer I.K. Gorner. Of particular value is the collection of fish collected in Japan. Naturalist Dr. G.I. Langsdorf Who brought zoological and botanical collections from the first Russian circumnavigation expedition, wrote: “…the fish that was brought to us as provisions became the object of scientific research, and finally we secretly agreed with our supplier that he would bring us different types of fish every time: Adviser Tilesius and I were engaged in them with great pleasure.
