The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of Palma in the Canary Archipelago began a month ago and, according to forecasts, will last up to three months. Scientists are talking about the threat of a giant wave, which may occur after the collapse of large volumes of rocks into the Atlantic Ocean.

“This tsunami can spread both to the African continent and to the coast of Europe,” depending on which side such a collapse will occur. Theoretically, the wave can reach America, but it depends on the scale of the eruption, says Samvel Hakobyan, chief Researcher at the Institute of Earth Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
