The United States is likely to leave about a thousand military personnel in Afghanistan to protect the US embassy and the airport in Kabul after the withdrawal of the main part of its contingent from the country, CNN reports, citing sources from among the country’s officials.
According to the TV channel, Washington can complete the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan within a few days.
At the same time, about a thousand US military personnel may remain in the country to assist in ensuring the security of the US embassy and the airport in Kabul.
United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, in turn, said that after the withdrawal of troops, the American side will continue to provide assistance to the security forces of Afghanistan, as well as provide economic and humanitarian support to the country.
The head of the State Department also recalled that over 20 years, the United States has spent about one trillion dollars in this military campaign.
“I believe that we were there for a reason, we managed to achieve what we wanted to achieve, and at some point Afghanistan should find its own future with our strong support,” Blinken said in an interview with the Italian National Broadcasting Corporation.
Earlier it was reported that Australian diplomatic missions will be closed in Afghanistan against the background of the withdrawal of the international military contingent.
