Instead of landfills, there are parks. How are waste landfills reclaimed?

Plot National projects

On September 25, an eco-race was held in Chelyabinsk on the site of the former city dump. On the reclaimed territory in the Metallurgical District, a 5-km-long highway was built. Young athletes and fans of an active lifestyle responded vividly to the invitation to take part in the ECO RACE, as the competition was called. They demonstrated not only endurance, but also agility, flexibility, strength, because there were two dozen different kinds of obstacles on the track, and everything had to be overcome.

Deputy Minister of Ecology of the Chelyabinsk region Vitaly Bezrukov He said that this race was held to increase the interest of the younger generation in the problems of their environment.

The Chelyabinsk landfill was located in the city, just 700 m from the residential development and 2 km from the Miass River. It was operated for 70 years, until 2018, and became famous throughout the country as the largest in Europe: the area is 74.5 hectares, the height is 40 m, the volume is 17.5 million cubic meters.

Thanks to the national project “Ecology”, work on neutralizing its harmful effects on the environment in 2019 has finally begun. The Federal Environmental Operator (Rosatom’s enterprise) completed them this year, using the most advanced global solutions for this purpose.

The entire territory has been reclaimed. A sarcophagus was built, which isolated the waste, preventing the release of landfill gases into the air and leachate effluents into the ground. Reinforced edges exclude the possibility of landslides. The soil is poured on top & nbsp; & mdash; as a result, a green hill appeared on the dump site.

Measurements of the mobile laboratory of the public organization “AntiSmog” have shown that the influence of this recently dangerous object on the atmosphere of the city has been reduced to zero. And the participants of the race appreciated it with their noses.

In the whole city, where more than 1 million people live, emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere after reclamation decreased by 30%. And taking into account the fact that the dumping of landfill filtrate has stopped, we can say that poisoning of water and land has been prevented.

Residents will decide

Within the framework of the federal project “Clean Country” (included in the national project “Ecology”) now work is underway on the reclamation of a landfill in another city of a million people, Nizhny Novgorod.

There, the Shuvalov landfill is one of the most problematic objects of accumulated environmental damage. The waste will be extracted from it and separated. Small fractions will be turned into recultivant soil and returned back, and large fractions will be delivered to the waste storage site. To date, 145 thousand tons of them have been extracted, clearing 2 hectares of the territory out of 17. The work is going on around the clock, and it is planned to complete it by the end of next year.

“What will happen here will be decided by the residents themselves. Perhaps they will want a public space, a park or a forest plantation to appear. It is important that there will never be a landfill here again, & nbsp; & mdash; believes Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Andrey Betin.

A little less than the Shuvalov landfill, the landfill of solid household waste in Sudak occupies 11 hectares of land, and the volume of garbage accumulated here for many years is 410 thousand cubic meters. It, like other landfills in the Crimea, is also being liquidated, and work here is going ahead of schedule.

And in the Saratov region, until 2024, an unauthorized landfill should be reclaimed in the Engels industrial zone, which is also huge: it covers an area of 26.6 hectares.

The key goal of the federal project “Clean Country” of the national project “Ecology” is to reduce the environmental damage associated with the disposal of solid household waste, and to reduce the environmental risks associated with objects of accumulated environmental damage. It is planned to reclaim especially dangerous objects until 2024 —the Krasny Bor and Usolye-Sibirskoye landfills, as well as the territory of the former Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill. In addition, an interactive information system will be created: according to reports from individuals and public organizations, unauthorized garbage dumps throughout the country will be detected and eliminated in a timely manner.
